Hallowe'en in Greenfield Village

Having Grandma come to visit was a great excuse to splurge and get tickets for Hallowe'en Nights at the Village. It was pricey and we probably won't do again till we have a really good excuse, but it was such a fun experience. Neither Daniel nor I appreciate the popular grotesque, dark side of Halloween. We really appreciated the fun, old fashioned, theatrical & spooky style of Halloween festivities they had at the village. We followed a path lined with Jack-O-Lanterns that wound through the village past lots of fun employees who were decked out in old fashioned costumes and role playing traditional spooky characters.

 

 

In one of the fields along the path there was this spooky scarecrow. In another field close by there was a live grim reaper sharpening his scythe next to a bonfire.

 

We liked how they dressed up this statue of Thomas Edison as a wizard, since he was known as the Wizard of Menlo Park.

 

 

The Jack-O-Lanterns were one of the best parts of the experience. There were literally hundreds of hand carved pumpkins lining the entire path along with several Jack-O-Lantern pyramids like this one. I just looked it up and there were at least 800 carved pumpkins. The crazy part is they carve all new pumpkins for each weekend and after Sunday night throw them all away!

 

The girls all wanted to pet this spider witch's giant spider. They have a fettish for all bugs and probably wish they could have a giant spider as a pet.

 

The last attraction of the night was a live re-enactment of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with the Headless Horseman chasing Ichabod Crane through a field on horse back. The girls were a little spooked but it was a good kind of spooky. Plus, it helped that our driver on the horse carriage a few months back told us that he would be playing the headless horseman. It was lots of fun and we were prepared for the cold and crowds. We will be excited when we have a good reason to splurge on it again!
