Camping at Crooked Lake

The weekend of May 30 we joined the Ruesch's on a fun camping adventure. It was pretty interesting to actually get all our stuff out and do the whole camping thing. This is Myka peeping out of the tent. She did great and loved following her sister's around everywhere. She was so tired by the time we got around to putting her to bed, she begged to get in the port-a-crib, asked for her pacifier and blanket, and was asleep while the rest of us were tromping around the tent.We were really close to the lake with this fun dock. The girls loved playing on it, except Myka was pretty scared because it moved and she could see the water through the cracks. They also like playing in the water (a little too much) at the little beach area next to it. During our stay, we heard from some other campers of a couple turtles that had been hanging around and went to check it out. There was one by the road buried down under some bushes and then this one just up the hill from the road. I am sure you can't tell from the size of the picture but it is a quite large snapping turtle that has dug its nest and is laying its eggs while Nora and Rachel watch.Daddy was too busy cleaning up to come check out the turtles with us so Myka decided to go show him it a little later. Well for some reason they couldn't find the turtle but Daddy caught her this cute frog and she was very proud of it. She loved showing it to all her sisters and friends and then was very nice to let it go on the dock and watch it hop back into the pond. On Saturday morning after we got mostly packed up, we decided to check out one of the trails and go for a hike. It was really pretty and green everywhere. The girls were really good hikers but had a little competition issue about who was going to be the leader. We liked this cool vine that hung across the trail. I think we decided it was a Virginia Creeper. This is Nora after letting her hang there too long while we dug the camera out and got it ready:-).We saw on the map that the trail we were following had an "overlook" only 1/2 a mile away and decided that would be our turning around point. Daniel of course got pretty excited about and "overlook", we haven't been able to look over the land in quite some time now. We didn't even notice the "overlook" as we passed it and kept on walking. We finally decided that we must have passed it and decided to turn around anyways. On the way back we did notice hiking up a small hill and then there was a bench at the top. We concluded that this must be the "overlook" and decided that they need to write (seasonal) under the overlook on the map since with the trees all green you really couldn't see anything. Guess we will have to try it out on cross country skis this winter. (ha, ha yeah right) Daniel also noticed that the "overlook" seemed to be right over the campground, so he decided to take the girls on an adventure through the woods instead of taking the trail home. He was right, of course, they were there in less than 3 minutes and had us wonderfully made sanwiches when we got there. I also didn't mention that just as we were getting into s'more making it started to sprinkle. We took it pretty seriously, since there were some severe weather warnings for the area, and tried to get everything put away and the kids in the tent quickly. It was coming down steadily by the time we got everyone inside and we got to go to bed listening to the thunder and watching the lightening. We were lucky and didn't get too wet, just the edges of our bags and pillows. It rained for about 3 hours; I kind of wish it had rained longer and harder. I have turned into such a light sleeper; with all the campground noise it was pretty hard for me to fall asleep. But that is O.K. I didn't actually expect to get much sleep in a tent. All in all we had a great time, minus the nasty mosquitos and the rain and it would have been perfect.

Graduation

The last day of school Kyla's class had a little program. She has really enjoyed preschool and always looked forward to going each day. She has lots of friends from her class and really loved her teachers.
Here is Kyla with her two preschool teachers, Mrs. Maibaum (left) and Mrs. Kubitz (right). They are both really good with the preschool age kids and have no problem keeping them in line and staying on task while having a great time in the process.
Kyla's best friend in preschool was Ava. They were inseparable and always making special things to give each other. Luckily, Ava's Mom decided to move Ava and her brother, Austin, (who is in Nora's class) to the same new school our girls will be in next year, so now she and Kyla can be in Kindergarten together and they won't have to start over with all new friends.
The girls enjoying the wild "after preschool graduation party" held at the Kindergarten playground in the sweltering heat. There was lots of good food and treats, complete with stuffed grape leaves, hummus, pitas, and assorted middle eastern desserts. A lot of the kids that were in Kyla's class are of middle eastern decent.

Memorial Day

Our Memorial Day started out early by getting up and getting cute to march in the Dearborn parade. The girls were able to particpate with their dance group. Daniel dropped us off and then drove to the end of the parade and took a whole lot of pictures while he was walking to find us. This is our backyard neighbors. He has this cool old army jeep. I think it is a 1940's WWII one. They had their two girls dressed in 40's clothes and sitting in the middle but I guess that Daniel went so fast he didn't see them. This was pretty much the only float in the parade. It was a pretty good sized parade but I guess they are not big on floats out here. This is the girls dance troop. And this is an up close of Nora strutting her stuff. She was really nervous because they had only just taught them the dance for the parade the week before and she didn't remember any of it. They pretty much danced the whole walk of the parade, they would just keep repeating the music. By the end Nora said she was having a fun time and liked doing the dance. We put her right behind one of the older girls so she could follow her but the other girls kept crowding around. So Daniel had a hard time getting a clear shot of her. It was one of those strange Michigan days when we couldn't decide if it was going to pour like crazy or be super hot and muggy. Unfortunately, the hot and muggy part won out and we were sweltering. Kyla enjoyed the parade from the back of truck. O.K. that was a serious overstatment, she didn't really like it at all. There was way too much waiting around and she didn't really care about waving to the people and looking cute. One of the coolest parts of the parade was this troop of unicylers. They had some that were up like 20 feet on down to really short.
Nora has a dark blue shirt on right behind the girl in all red.

Memorial Day (cont.)

Right after the parade we headed straight for Greenfield Village for the Civil War Remembrance Weekend. It was super busy so we had to park way out back. We met our good friends, the William's and Ruesch's, for some neat reenactments and demonstrations. The whole village was decked in army camp gear. You could even enlist, like is was back then. Looks like the parade followed us to the village! This is Alyssa, Kyla, and Katie watching the march while the rest of us take a potty break. We met the Williams and went to a neat dramatic play about what it was like for the slaves after the war was won. It was really interesting to see how scared they were of both the North and the South sides and although they were free didn't really have anywhere to go or the means to do so. We all hoped aboard the train for a fun ride and timed it right to see them do a "blow-down" in the woods. They blow out a bottom chamber with steam so they don't get build up. It is pretty impressive when they blow it out four times in a row. It was so hot that we actually didn't go exploring the village very much that day, but just camped under the trees at Walnut Grove and waited between each demonstration. We splurged and got lunch from the Southern Style Lunch Stand. It was great: sweet potato fries, hush puppies, fried okra, fried catfish, fried chicken, and coleslaw (at least EVERYTHING wasn't fried). This is a picture of the cavalry demonstration. They practiced riding in formation, cavalry drills, and then a mock battle at the end. Myka was excited to go and pet one of the horses and patiently waited for a long time to take her turn to ask the man herself what the horse's name was. I can't believe how big she is getting. So during one of the waits between demonstrations. I got the hankering for some Greenfield Village custard. Unfortunately, the only place to get it was a good walk away. Daniel, Kyla, Myka, and Addie all offered to go get some. Daniel was just going to carry Myka and have the girls run but as I raised my eyebrows I suggested he take the stroller. This picture does not do justice to the situation they were just covered in melting ice cream pretty much from head to toe. Daniel told me he was pushing the stroller with Myka holding an ice cream and Addie holding two, melting all over them. Kyla got a lot of strange looks as she tried to run as fast as she could with an ice cream cone in each hand dripping to her elbows and then on down. Needless to say, the shirts never came all the way clean and the girls were still sticky after a pack of wet wipes. But the custard was yummy! Thanks to Birgitte who remembers to take pictures at these crazy moments. The girls missed the canon demonstration while they were on their ice cream run, but that is O.K. they can catch it next year. Nora and Alyssa came back from the glass blowing shop just in time to catch the battle demonstration, where the two armies showed different techniques they used back then in fighting (i.e. all lining up and firing all at the same time, firing in succession, sending >in smaller groups first and coming up with the second brigade later) This is a picture of the Union Army with their sharp shooters going in first and the brigade waiting to come in and help when needed. And the Confederate Army is in the next one. It was kind of neat how they did the whole "play dead" thing. At the end of each demonstration they would say over the intercom "The wounded will please arise and join the ranks". The girls needed a little convincing that no one was actually getting hurt and it was all just for show. At the very end both armies lined up on the opposite side of the field from us and all fired their guns in unison and then charged the audience with their bayonets, well not really of course they stayed safely behind the ropes. By the time the village closed we were so done. It was very nice to come home, shower, and slather the vinegar on sunburns.

Pond Specimens

On Friday the 23, we had a field trip with Kyla's class. We met at the University of Michigan (Dearborn Campus) Nature Center. The college kids then took us on a nature walk past part of a lake and to this great pond which is actually all part of the Henry Ford Estate. We got to see lots of turtles and one of the college kids caught a snake on our way up.Once we got to the pond the students instructed kids on how to get their own pond specimens. They were really excited and it was a lot of fun. They would scoop up some plant material from the pond dump it in the basins that had a little water in them, swish the plants around and then grab them and throw them back in the pond. We were amazed at how many little critters we found. We found lots of different nymphs, dragonfly nymphs, caddis fly nymphs and a few others I can't remember. Of course there were lots of polywogs; tons of tiny ones that will be toads in a few weeks and a few big ones that take 2 YEARS to grow into frogs. I couldn't believe that they take that long.Kyla was the only one in the group to catch a big polywog and she was pretty proud of it. After everyone left we hung around and explored the Nature Center, they have a fun quiet room you can sit and watch the bird feeders, it was really fun. We will definately be going back there, especially since the grounds are open anytime.

Primary Activity

O.K. so I am writing in reverse a little. This is from the week of May 12. We went walking on Monday. It was cold and rainy so we ended up walking the museum instead of the village. But then some people told us that they were doing special activites at the village for Macey's 2nd Mondays. And of course we have a hard time ever missing out on anything. This is the girls dancing around the maypole. They had a man playing fun music on a guitar for them to dance to. They also got to plant grass seed for the sheep, make seed mosaics, and plant a bean in a cup to take home. It was fun but they were freezing when we got done.
Saturday we took a family bike ride down to the church for the Primary activity. The girls had a great time planting the flowers and playing with friends there. It is going to be fun to watch the flowers grow all summer, last year they grew huge and were really pretty.

We Finally Did It!

Daniel and I have been listening to the Harry Potter books on CD. (While we vigorously multi-tasked-Daniel says. Hey, it was a great way to get the cut out wall finished, the dishes done, and painting in the bedroom done. We were even motivated to get up and excercise in the mornings if we had it to listen to. We haven't gotten anything like that done since we finished and ran out of motivation.) We finished the last CD a couple of weeks ago. It was a lot of fun, and we both really enjoyed it. We would get the movies from the library after we finished each book. That was fun to get caught up on but also pretty diappointing having the book so fresh in my mind. I think I enjoy the movies a lot more when I have had more time to forget the book, so I am not so angry about all the stuff they left out and how they spent so much time glamourizing other parts (that weren't that way in the book). Just so you all know, we can now join in on your Harry Potter conversations somewhat knowledgeably.

Tents, Twins, and Trains

Last week was a lot of fun. I was able to go walking with Birgitte at the village 3 times. I got the trailer hooked up to my bike so I actually rode my bike to the village two of those times. It was fun but definately works different muscles than I am used to. Tuesday I had a dentist appointment and so the rest of the week my mouth was pretty sore from that.
Friday night we had a Ward Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and after that Daniel decided we needed to have a campout to trial run our camping gear. The girls had a great time out in the tent in the backyard with Daddy. Myka lasted till about 10, until she was driving Daniel so crazy bouncing all over that he brought her in and put her in her crib. We are not sure how it is going to work out with her when we actually are camping. I had a great time inside watching Enchanted for the first time and working on cards.

Saturday

Saturday was quite eventful for us. I took Myka to a birthday party that morning and Daniel headed to the village with Nora and Kyla. We decided since it was the last weekend at the village for Thomas to be there we'd better take some pictures. Myka and I met them at the farm where Nora informed me that there were twin newborn lambs that they saw only 15 mintues after they were born. We also got to see them milk Fern, the cow.

Saturday Continued

Daniel and the girls spent the afternoon enjoying the village and had a great time. As Daniel tells it - it was pretty much a picture shoot the whole day and he took like 50 pictures. We found out a few things about Thomas. At first I didn't even think that he was an actual steam train, but some kind of electric look alike; because he is so much cleaner and quieter than the other steam trains at the village. He has a very high pitched clear whistle, just like in the movies; totally different from the other trains. And as Nora helped us discover his eyes do actually move around.
The village is a great place to see Thomas, we get in to all the activites free with our membership pass. If we had wanted a ride it would have been $12 each, but the girls were O.K. with just watching him. Especially after we told them that he was pulling the same carriages that we always ride on and when you are riding you don't really get to see much of him anyways.Hey all you little boys! Make room for this cute little girl, she likes trains too!
Oh so close and yet so far away. The challenges of being 2 - Myka really wanted a drink but wouldn't let Daniel help her. "NO! I DO IT MYSELF!" I love this picture

Saturday Concluded

The first time that Kyla and Myka saw Thomas at the village was two weeks ago on Friday. It was just a coincidence that we were going walking that day with Birgitte and her kids. Myka and Kyla were sooo excited and amazed that he really was a real train. We just had to bring Nora back after school, we knew she would be so excited. When we got there that afternoon, Nora barely had a glimpse of him going past the front as we entered the park. I told Nora if we ran really fast we could make it across the village and to Walnut Grove where he would be coming out of the forest. We both ran really hard and got a lot of strange looks, especially since we were going in the opposite direction from all the Thomas activities. Once we got to Walnut Grove I pointed her in the right direction and she kept running across the field just in time to see Thomas come out of the trees and head straight towards her. The engineers all leaned out the window and waved to her. Thomas gave her a special little whistle and even turned his eyes to look at her. It was such a perfect childhood moment, just her and the train in the middle of a big field far away from all the crowds at the other end of the village. I really wish I had had my camera and got it on video but I was running too hard to make it happen anyway.

I left the girls and Daniel at the village and met a couple of great friends for some Mother's Day pampering. Birgitte, Summer, and I went out to lunch at Panera and then off for manicures/pedicures. We realized we had never been together without the kids before and it was a lot of fun to have a real conversation. They dropped me off at the church for a R.S. meeting for a couple hours and then that evening I was off again to craft night while Daniel got to feed and put the girls to bed.

Sunday they pampered me well with cards, flowers, and a whole afternoon to rest. I am excited to have finally, slowly gotten into some better routines so hopefully I can get a handle on the household chores and still have time for something more "permanent", you know stuff that you aren't going to have to redo next week.

Hooray for May

We had a fun week - Monday we went walking at the Museum in the morning and the girls had fun looking at all the great stuff as we did circles. I had a two and a half hour dentist appointment on Tuesday and on Thursday Kyla and I went bowling for a class field trip.Daniel got all our bikes tuned up for the season and we went on a fun bike ride up to the girl's school that they will be attending next year. They had a great time playing on the fun playground. On the way home we stopped by the Farm Market and filled the trailer with pansies.<On Saturday, the girls had a great time helping Daniel plant them in this old fashioned box thing that was left on the front lawn when we moved in. I had a Relief Society meeting that morning so that is my explanation of their hairdo's for that day. Saturday we were able to go to the temple while the girls stayed at the Ruesch's, and we all had a great time. Nora has decided that she would like to learn to ride a bike this spring so I am starting to work with her, but we will see how that goes.
