On Friday the 23, we had a field trip with Kyla's class. We met at the University of Michigan (Dearborn Campus) Nature Center. The college kids then took us on a nature walk past part of a lake and to this great pond which is actually all part of the Henry Ford Estate. We got to see lots of turtles and one of the college kids caught a snake on our way up.

Once we got to the pond the students instructed kids on how to get their own pond specimens. They were really excited and it was a lot of fun. They would scoop up some plant material from the pond dump it in the basins that had a little water in them, swish the plants around and then grab them and throw them back in the pond. We were amazed at how many little critters we found.

We found lots of different nymphs, dragonfly nymphs, caddis fly nymphs and a few others I can't remember. Of course there were lots of polywogs; tons of tiny ones that will be toads in a few weeks and a few big ones that take 2 YEARS to grow into frogs. I couldn't believe that they take that long.

Kyla was the only one in the group to catch a big polywog and she was pretty proud of it. After everyone left we hung around and explored the Nature Center, they have a fun quiet room you can sit and watch the bird feeders, it was really fun. We will definately be going back there, especially since the grounds are open anytime.
